A summon is an animal (or objects) used for combat, and in order to summon them you have to use a summoning scroll, and usually have to used blood for the blood contract.
A pet is an animal that follows you round all the time, not just when it is summoned. For instance, a dog or a cat would be a pet. These can be combat, and non combat.
